They used to have SATs exams at the end of year 9, and the school got the graded exams back - one of my coworkers basically send the whole of her classes exams back for regrading because they were scored so low for what was reasonable work (this wasn't an "every child is wonderful and unique and has done their best" type of person either, she was very strict with high expectations. And in England, your final marks on the test are very much tied to you, you use them on CVs for job applications and to apply for 6th form and university. Well, this was all true 5 years ago anyway, I know that they have suffered from much of the constant change in education problem we have as well with new exams and curriculum being put forth with changes in administration.
