Sure sign you're teaching in Vermont.

"Hey, Mr. Curmudgeon.  I won't be in on Thurday or Friday.  My family is going hunting.  I'm hoping to get a moose."

  1. And I thought you were teaching in New Hampshire. I think your blog name misled me.

  2. Same thing in Upper Michigan. Actually, the first day of deer season is a holiday there, since most of the teachers will be taking the day off too.

  3. Ha, Ha! No moose here, but yep, my students come and tell me they need their work because they will be out for first day of deer hunting season. My personal opinion on this is they will benefit more from the quality time with their father more than any algebra lesson I could ever teach.

  4. Jonathan ... A few curmudgeons are alive and well in the Socialist State of Vermont. I mean, someone has to be reasonable around here.

  5. I spent a year in Kuwait (05-06) with a National Guard brigade from Wisconsin. My boss was a high school counselor and he made a similar comment...the day hunting season opens the school is empty!
